LIV Golf South Africa: Sold-out Steyn City braced for historic weekend showdown

DeChambeau clings to lead at sold-out Steyn City as Southern Guards charge and Calvin Harris preps for Saturday night spectacle.

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – The first-ever LIV Golf event on African soil has officially moved from a highly anticipated debut to a record-breaking phenomenon. LIV Golf has announced that tickets for Saturday and Sunday have officially sold out, as thousands of fans descend on The Club at Steyn City for a weekend of world-class sport and entertainment.

With a R1 billion tourism boost already projected for the region, the atmosphere on the ground has exceeded all expectations, blending high-stakes golf with a massive cultural festival, per the below NOWinSA X video.

Leaderboard heat: DeChambeau vs The Southern Guards

Following a high-octane Friday, Crushers GC Captain Bryson DeChambeau remains the man to beat. Seeking his second consecutive individual title after a playoff win in Singapore, DeChambeau holds a 36-hole lead at 14-under par.

However, the local favorites, the Southern Guards GC, are in a prime position to stage a weekend coup. The all-South African team currently sits in solo second, just two shots behind Torque GC on the team leaderboard.

  • Branden Grace is leading the charge for the home side, tied for second at 12-under.
  • Dean Burmester electrified the gallery on Friday, donning the new Bafana Bafana kit at the par-3 17th “Lion’s Den” and nearly walking in a hole-in-one to finish T4 at 11-under.
  • Jon Rahm is lurking just three shots back at 11-under, having played 40 consecutive holes without a single bogey.

“This place is just a special place. It’s exceeded my expectations,” DeChambeau remarked after Friday’s round, noting that the atmosphere already felt like a tournament Sunday.

Beyond the fairways: A sold-out festival vibe

The “LIV Vibe” has taken full control of the Fan Village. Following Friday’s headline performance by Mzansi’s own Grammy-winning Black Coffee, the momentum is only growing.

Today (Saturday), the festivities reach a fever pitch. With gates opening early due to a revised 9:35 AM shotgun start, the sold-out crowd is currently enjoying a curated culinary experience by local chefs Ollie Swart and Reuben Riffel at Savour by LIV Golf.

As the sun sets, the focus shifts to the music:

  • 4:15 PM: St. Lucia takes to the stage.
  • 5:30 PM: Global icon Calvin Harris delivers the Saturday night headline set.
