JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed the official payment schedule for May 2026, providing millions of beneficiaries with clarity on when to access their funds.
SASSA distributes payments over three consecutive days in early May to manage the volume of people at payment points. Beneficiaries must monitor specific compliance requirements, including SASSA eLife certification triggers, to complete necessary verifications and avoid payment disruptions.
SASSA social grant payment dates for May 2026
SASSA confirmed the following dates for May 2026:
- SASSA Old Age Grant (Older Persons) and War Veterans Grant: Tuesday, May 5
- SASSA Dissability grant and Care Dependency Grant: Wednesday, May 6
- SASSA Children’s grants (Child Support, Foster Child, Grant-in-Aid): Thursday, May 7
- SASSA SRD R370 grant: May 25–30 (processed in batches)
The agency deposits all payments directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts or Postbank accounts. Beneficiaries collecting cash at retail partners and post offices must follow this same schedule.
Public holidays and SASSA payment schedules
Workers’ Day falls on Friday, May 1, but this public holiday will not disrupt the payment cycle in any way. SASSA only adjusts dates if the scheduled payment day falls directly on a weekend or public holiday.
This model ensures system stability while prioritising early-month payments. Beneficiaries experiencing delays due to system checks can find more information regarding ongoing Sassa verification delays.
“The general principle for determining the grant payment dates for social grants is to ensure they are paid as early in the month as possible, staggered over three days,” SASSA stated in its official release.

Digital SASSA e-Life certification and system upgrades
SASSA is tightening verification processes and promoting digital tools to improve efficiency and prevent fraud. Beneficiaries must complete their life certification annually, or immediately if SASSA flags their account for review.
“From digital applications and self-service kiosks to biometric verification and cashless payments, SASSA is improving access while strengthening fraud prevention. SASSA is committed to delivering reliable social security services that improve lives and empower communities,” said CEO Themba Matlou.
The agency has also intensified eligibility checks through real-time data systems. Matlou noted that this reconfirmation process protects public funds and reinforces accountability.
How to contact SASSA and manage your grant
Officials urges beneficiaries to keep personal details updated and respond quickly to any verification requests to avoid grant suspension.
The agency “reiterates its commitment to paying social grants to eligible beneficiaries at the right time and appeals to all beneficiaries who may not have received their grants on these specified dates to visit their nearest local SASSA office for assistance,” the statement read.
