Jazz meets gospel for a spirited comedy inspired concert

A series of not to be missed comedy inspired jazz meets gospel music concerts is set to revitalize the South African live music scenes

PERFOMER-AUDIENCE interaction is critical to any successful live music gig, more so for a jazz-meets-gospel type of concert. Add to that Selaelo Selota’s electic stage energy, sprinkled with Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse’s funky township disco-jive sing alongs, and a good dose of Benjamin Dube’s soul-stirring stage delivery, you sure have a perfect recipe for a truly interactive “lost in the moment” show that will get you totally enthralled, and off your feet for the most part of the show.

What with the much-loved Solly Mahlangu’s haunting yet soothing vocals, infectious singing and stage vibrancy all wrapped into one exhilarating rendition? These and more are some of the special treats awaiting guests looking to attend the Comedy & The Jazz Gospel Truth on Friday, August 2 at the Revealing Christ Champion Center in Elim, Limpopo. Gautengers will get their turn on Saturday, August 17 at the House of The Twelve Apostles Hall, Roodepoort.

A one of a kind entertainment extravaganza which places improvization at its core, comedy of course will be the order of the day as some of the country’s most loved stand-up comedians take to the stage on the night to remind us of the natural connection between comedy and music. Among them is funnyman Kedibone Mulaudzi, Mashabela Galane and Hector The Motivator.

Explaining the vision behind this unique, multi-faceted musical concept, this is what the celebrated jazz guitarist Selaelo Selota, the brains behind the event had to say: “The inspiration came through my firsthand observation as a musician that music does indeed cut across diverse cultural and religious landscapes. It is a soul and an ear bender. Just one hymn at a jazz festival during the artists change over can captivate the whole 20 thousand-plus crowd, as they sing and dance until a new artist takes to the stage.”

Relax, recharge with the healing power of music

Comedy & The Jazz Gospel Truth, a concert like no other

Brought up in the rural Limpopo with a heightened artistic sensitivity, Selota knows all too well the healing power of music – jazz and gospel to be precise. “They have a strong sense of healing, that of allowing the listener to say ‘it will one day all be right with me’.” He adds: “On the other side, there’s also been a lot of impromptu comedy happening in our churches. The way people get hypnotized, and other hoping and believing in the miracle of money like manna falling from heaven has been quite a comedic revelation.”

In this context, a new concept was born with the aim of bringing laughter and entertainment to both the jazz, comedy and gospel enthusiasts in an intimate church setting, now known as the Comedy & The Jazz Gospel Truth.
