Entries now open for 2022 Vaal River City Marathon

The 2020 edition of the Rand Water Vaal River City Marathon is fast approaching and qualifying runners can register now to book their space in the race, set to take place on Sunday, October 2.

Online entries are now open for the 4th edition of the Vaal River City Marathon (VRCM) which will once again focus on attracting record numbers from qualifying participants from all corners of South Africa and neighbouring countries ahead of September 30 registration deadline.

All thanks to the involvement of Rand Water as the title sponsor, and Seriti Group coming on board as the race co-partner, this one-of-its-kind marathon will showcase the scenic landscapes of Emfuleni, situated on the banks of the Vaal River, South of Johannesburg.

“The Vaal River City Marathon is a qualifier for both the Comrades and Two Oceans Marathon,” says marathon organiser Sechaba Oliphant, adding: “It is important for us to showcase our area as a sports-tourism destination as well as the host of one of the most beautiful and scenic marathons in South Africa. The Vaal region is a beautiful area of contrasting landscapes, hence it has become a favourite destination for leisure and adventure for travelers worldwide.”

Oliphant expressed his gratitude to the race’s esteemed partners, Rand Water and Seriti Group, “whose contributions made this event possible and enabled us to find solutions that support our national socio-economic imperatives.”

Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo says their participation in the race is an expression of their ongoing mission to engage with stakeholders in the Vaal area that have similar progressive and developmental goals for the region. “Rand Water supports healthy living initiatives that improve our communities’ wellness and water conversation,” she added.

Seriti New Vaal Colliery General Manager, Tiro Tamenti expressed his excitement about being part of this year’s event, stating: “The wellness of our employees and the community is something that we take as seriously as our safety drive. As a mine operating in this local community, we are intentional in aligning our brand with organisations that focus on local economic development.

“Our aim is to advance the work we conduct in hosting municipalities to address the pressing needs and harness opportunities to create self-sustaining and empowered communities for generations to come.”

Scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 2, the marathon will take off from the Isak Steyl Stadium in a thrilling 10km, 21km and an all grueling 42.2km marathon.
