Telkom takes over DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards as the headline sponsor

South Africa's telecommunications giant Telkom is set to shake things up this year as it takes over the ropes in a new "very meaningfully involved role" as the headline sponsor for the 4th instalment of DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards (DMVCA) later in June.

It’s official; South Africa’s mobile service provider Telkom is the new headline sponsor for the 4th edition of DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards (DMVCA).

Speaking exclusively to NOWinSA on the sidelines of a press briefing at Maslow Hotel in Sandton, Telkom Communications executive, Mooketsi Mocumi said the partnership heralds an exciting new era as they continue to involve in the arts and lifestyle space.

“Telkom has always been involved the arts, you’d know that we have our video-on-demand streaming platform, TelkomOne, where we stream shows such as ‘Telkom Monate Vibes‘. During the pandemic, we also had a competition called ‘Open Up The Industry‘, where we gave new content producers with no money or studios, the opportunity to create content in the format they’re comfortable with, and now we are telling those stories on the TelkomOne platform.

“All this goes to show that we really are big supporters of the arts, especially during Covid-19, where we’ve been making sure that artists had some work to do by streaming their music and keeping them relevant.”

He adds: “As a brand that is steeped in South Africa, we think that it is very important that we acknowledge the people who tell our stories, that’s why we’ve decided to be part of the awards (DMVCA). It does resonate with us as a brand that looks after South African connectivity and content creation.”

Just as Telkom demonstrated how big brands can be intentional and use their power to enact change and inspire customers during the height of the Covid-19 crisis, the formation of the partnership between Mzansi Magic and Telkom, Mocumi goes on to explain, was carefully thought out, with a solid strategy to elevate local talent as voted by the communities and fans at home.

“The beauty about DStv is that they have a wide footprint, which will help us meaningfully connect and interact with both existing and prospective customers, as we get to meet them where they’re at, which is where they watch their favourite TV shows and soapies. This way, we get to experience – in a more involved way – their lifestyle and what they want in their own space, other than at our Telkom stores when they come to buy data or airtime.”

As one of the biggest provider of wireless communication services in South Africa for mobile, home and business, Telkom fittingly comes onto the DMVCA project to support the award’s brand activations and voting. Viewers can look out for exciting prizes from Telkom throughout the campaign, leading to the night of the awards.

DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards host, Lawrence Maleka, will be guiding voters through the process until the big event on June 25.

Commenting on the partnership, Shirley Adonisi, director of Local Entertainment Channels for MultiChoice said she “could not have imagined a more exciting partner for the DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards campaign. “With Telkom by our side, we will be able to give our valued subscribers an unforgettable experience.”

The announcement adds to the anticipation for this year’s awards show, which makes its return to the Sun Arena in Pretoria and live on Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) on June 25.

Not only this, Diageo’s iconic spirit brand Tanqueray is also coming on board for the first time this year as an associate sponsor, a move which further cements the unwavering interest in the awards from major brands post pandemic.

The Lion King cast member and producer Lebo M is the recipient of 2021 DMVCA Lifetime Achiever.
