Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Today marks a significant milestone for South Africa as it officially assumes the Presidency of the G20 during a Handover Ceremony at the 2024 G20 Rio de Janeiro Summit.

This momentous occasion places South Africa at the helm of global economic governance and diplomacy, offering a unique opportunity to champion the interests of the Global South.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, who accepted the G20 Presidency on behalf of the nation, emphasised South Africa’s commitment to building on the legacy of its predecessors. Under the theme of “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability,” South Africa’s Presidency promises to prioritise the needs and concerns of developing nations.

“We are honored to assume the G20 Presidency and are committed to working with all member states to address the pressing challenges facing our world,” President Ramaphosa stated. “Our focus will be on fostering inclusive growth, promoting sustainable development, and strengthening multilateralism.”

The South African Presidency is expected to focus on the following key areas:

  • Promoting economic recovery and resilience: South Africa will work to strengthen global cooperation to support economic recovery efforts in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and address the challenges posed by climate change and geopolitical tensions.
  • Addressing inequality and poverty: The Presidency will prioritize initiatives aimed at reducing inequality and poverty, particularly in developing countries. This includes promoting access to education, healthcare, and decent work.
  • Championing sustainable development: South Africa will advocate for a transition to a more sustainable and inclusive global economy, with a focus on climate action, renewable energy, and green technologies.
  • Strengthening multilateralism: The Presidency will work to strengthen the role of the G20 as a forum for international cooperation and dialogue, emphasizing the importance of multilateralism in addressing global challenges.
