October SASSA Boost — Still on the Cards?
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is expected to roll out a second round of grant increases in October 2025, but no new confirmation has been issued in recent weeks.
As is often the case — and as in previous years — SASSA traditionally implements a “double increase” each year, with the first social grants hike for 2025 successfully administered in April and a smaller top-up expected in October. This approach is part of the government’s effort to cushion vulnerable households against rising inflation and food costs.
In 2024, the second increase was only R10, raising concerns among advocacy groups that the adjustments are failing to keep pace with inflation.
Government Facebook post confirmed it in May
While SASSA has not issued a recent press statement, an official South African Government Facebook post shared in May 2025 did confirm that a R10 top-up will be applied in October 2025.
The message reads:
“From 1 April 2025, the Old Age Grant increases by R120 to R2,310, with another R10 boost coming on 1 October 2025.
The COVID-19 #SRD Grant is extended to 31 March 2026.”
This post, though not recent, remains the most direct reference to the October increase currently available to the public.
Current Grant amounts (after April 2025 increase)
- Older Persons’ Grant (60–74 years) & Disability Grant — R2,315
- Older Persons’ Grant (75+ years) — R2,335
- War Veterans’ Grant — R2,315
- Care Dependency Grant — R2,315
- Child Support Grant — R560
- Grant-in-Aid — R560
- Foster Care Grant — R1,250
- SRD Grant — R370

Why these increases matter
The modest top-ups, though small, make a meaningful difference for millions of grant recipients. Rising food, transport, and healthcare costs continue to stretch household budgets, with civil society groups urging government to implement larger and more inflation-linked increases.
For many beneficiaries, the October rise — even if only R10 — provides some measure of relief as the year-end approaches.
What to do now
Beneficiaries are urged to:
- Monitor SASSA’s official website for confirmation.
- Contact SASSA directly for queries via their official contact channels.
- Be alert to fraud and misinformation, especially on social media, where fake announcements often circulate.
