South African drama The Polygamist claims No. 3 on Netflix global chart

The Stained Glass TV production ranks as the most-watched show in 16 countries across Africa, including South Africa, and notably Europe, the Caribbean and Asia.

South African drama ‘The Polygamist‘ has climbed to No. 3 on Netflix’s worldwide television rankings, introducing Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi’s 2012 novel to a far broader audience.

Daily figures tracked by FlixPatrol show only ‘Teach You a Lesson‘ and ‘The Witness‘ ahead of the series.

The latest rankings place ‘The Polygamist‘ above ‘Outlast:The Jungle‘, ‘Sweet Magnolias‘, ‘Viral Hit‘ and ‘Michael Jackson: The Verdict‘.

The series premiered on June 12, 2026, and comes from Stained Glass TV.

Netflix rankings boost South African drama inspired by Sue Nyathi novel

Adapted from Nyathi’s novel of the same name, the series moves the original Zimbabwean setting to Johannesburg while retaining its themes of betrayal, revenge, power and family fallout.

The 22-episode drama centres on Jonasi Gomora, played by Sdumo Mtshali, a self-made businessman whose secret relationships gradually unravel the life he built with wife Joyce, portrayed by Gugu Gumede.

Akin Omotoso serves as showrunner and directed the series alongside Rolie Nikiwe and Nthabi Tau. Busisiwe Zwane led the writing team.

Stained Glass TV also confirmed, per X post below, that the drama has reached No 1 in 16 countries across Africa, Europe, Asia and the Caribbean.

Blood & Water comparisons emerge as viewers debate The Polygamist’s reach

Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela believes The Polygamist may struggle to match the crossover success of ‘Blood & Water‘, which attracted large audiences in Latin America and later crossed over with Spanish teen series Elite.

He nevertheless described ‘The Polygamist‘ as a deserved hit, arguing that the production succeeds because it allows the story to drive the drama rather than relying on spectacle or viral moments.

“The story is the star here. The brilliant performances just add to the magic. When you have a solid script, a cohesive cast, you don’t need the noise. The actors here shine in their roles because they are not fighting the script for a viral moment, ” he wrote.

Some viewers disagreed with the comparison, noting that ‘The Polygamist‘ reached No 3 worldwide within days of release and may yet outperform previous South African titles.

The strong showing comes as Netflix continues to dominate local viewing conversations despite renewed debate over a proposed streaming levy. (ALSO READ: Streaming levy proposal sparks debate.)

The platform has produced several talking points for South African audiences, from ‘Blood & Water‘ to reality smash hit franchises such as ‘Love Is Blind’.

FlixPatrol’s daily chart tracks the most-watched shows across all languages worldwide. The current Top 10 also includes ‘Raw,’ ‘SweetMagnolias‘, ‘Losing Judgment‘ and ‘My Royal Nemesis‘.

All 22 episodes of ‘The Polygamist‘ are now streaming on Netflix.
