Thierry Henry attends Soweto Derby as Kaizer Chiefs host Orlando Pirates

French football legend Thierry Henry joins a sold-out FNB Stadium as Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs renew South Africa's greatest rivalry.

The Soweto Derby returns to FNB Stadium this Saturday, 31 October 2026.

The massive ticket demand mirrored last year’s 2025 ticket frenzy, with this year’s tickets selling out in just two hours.

As South Africa’s two biggest soccer teams, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates always deliver high-stakes football.

This time, they do so in front of a sold-out crowd and a global football icon.

For fans who could not secure a ticket, we have compiled a complete guide on how to watch the Soweto Derby live on TV, streaming, and radio.

Thierry Henry brings a global spotlight to the Soweto Derby

French football legend Thierry Henry will be in attendance.

The former Arsenal and Barcelona forward, and World Cup winner, will join supporters at FNB Stadium.

Betway officially confirmed the football legend’s arrival in South Africa. Henry will experience the occasion first-hand as a global brand ambassador.

“I’ve experienced some incredible football rivalries around the world, and I know how much the Soweto Derby means to supporters in South Africa,” Henry said.

“I’m excited to experience that atmosphere at FNB Stadium and to meet some of the fans who make the occasion what it is.”

Henry will also present a prize to the winner of Betway’s S’bonise & Win campaign.

The campaign celebrates supporters who show their team spirit through their colours, with account holders eligible to win up to R30 000.

A rich history between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates

To understand the Soweto Derby, you have to appreciate what it represents beyond football.

Orlando Pirates, established in 1937, carry a history that spans generations. Kaizer Chiefs, founded in 1970, have built their own formidable legacy.

The black and white of Pirates and the gold and black of Chiefs are not simply colours on a shirt.

They are symbols of belonging, defended with passion.

For the players, the opportunity is both a privilege and a burden. Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Stanton Fredericks, affectionately known as Stiga, knows exactly what that pressure feels like.

“Your training intensity is at its highest because you’re fighting for a starting berth,” Fredericks explains. “The focus normally goes to 110% — locked in.”

Fredericks also understands the impact of the result. “Coming off a win in the derby can change your entire season! It adds massive confidence to the team going forward.”

Chiefs and Pirates enter the derby with contrasting form

Pirates arrive with confidence after a strong run of performances. They have scored 11 goals without conceding across their previous four matches.

Chiefs, meanwhile, have endured a difficult spell. But a 3-0 midweek victory at FNB Stadium offers Amakhosi encouragement.

Earlier this season, Chiefs showed promise by beating Siwelele 3-2 in September to move up the Betway Premiership log.

Former Orlando Pirates striker and SuperSport analyst Phumudzo Manenzhe, known as ‘The Bold’ , points to Pirates’ attacking threat.

“They are a speedy team which most opponents have found hard to contain,” he says.

For Chiefs, the challenge is to build on their midweek victory. Fredericks believes their defensive discipline will be crucial.

“They need to get their defence in order. If they do not concede early, they have the attacking strength to test the Pirates defence.”

Expert analysis and predictions for the Soweto Derby

There is a reason players speak about the Soweto Derby differently. A massive performance will edge your name in the history books forever.

Manenzhe encourages supporters to look beyond the goalscorers.

“The hero is always the goal scorer,” he says. “But the ones that follow the game like me will always look at which player had the control of the derby.”

Pirates have the opportunity to reinforce their current momentum. Chiefs can use the occasion to reignite belief.

As Manenzhe puts it, preparation should not be about reinventing the wheel.

“Whoever does the simple and basic things the best always wins the game mostly.” The rest will be decided where it always is: on the pitch.

Expert Predictions:
Phumudzo Manenzhe: Orlando Pirates 3–1 Kaizer Chiefs
Stanton Fredericks: Orlando Pirates 2–2 Kaizer Chiefs
