Comrades Marathon 2026 winner’s prize money: George Kusche claims record R8.2m purse share

George Kusche's record-breaking Comrades Marathon victory unlocked multiple bonuses, pushing his earnings well beyond the winner's cheque.

George Kusche won the 2026 Comrades Marathon and unlocked an estimated R2.67 million in race-day earnings.

Kusche crossed the finish line in an official time of 5:15:56, setting a new Up Run course record and breaking Leonid Shvetsov’s long-standing mark of 5:24:49 set in 2008.

His combined earnings are estimated at approximately R2.67 million after prize money, performance bonuses and team incentives.

The performance unlocked several bonuses offered by the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) and event sponsors. It also triggered incentive payments available through his running club.

The CMA increased the total 2026 prize purse to R8,210,400, up 10% from 2025.

Here is how Kusche’s payout breaks down and how the overall prize money is distributed across the field.

Comrades Marathon 2026 route: Why the Up Run record fell

The 2026 Up Run route measured 85.777km. That is approximately 133 metres shorter than the 2024 Up Run.

The shorter route created faster racing conditions and fuelled speculation that the Up Run record could fall.

Kusche capitalised on those conditions and produced the fastest official Up Run in Comrades Marathon history.

CMA general manager Alain Dalais said the route and prize structure reflect the association’s ambition to maintain the race’s standing in global ultra-marathon running.

“This once again shows the CMA’s commitment to making the ultimate human race the most sought-after and most competitive ultra-marathon in the world.”

When Comrades Marathon 2026 prize money will be paid

The CMA issues prize money, trophies and special gold medals after completing its post-race processes.

The association expects to finalise payments within 60 days of doping-control procedures, regardless of whether an athlete undergoes testing.

South African tax legislation applies to all prize-money payments. Administrative processing can take up to three months.
