Bafana Bafana make World Cup history after beating South Korea to reach Round of 32

South Africa woke up to a historic football result after Bafana Bafana defeated South Korea 1-0 to secure a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time.

The victory in Monterrey – secured by Thapelo Maseko’s 63rd-minute strike – completed a turnaround for Hugo Broos’ side, who opened their campaign with defeat before rebuilding confidence with a draw against Czechia.

Bafana will now face Canada in the Round of 32.

The achievement follows a difficult start that included a World Cup opening defeat and pre-tournament travel delays.

Broos silences critics as Bafana deliver

Bafana arrived in Mexico under pressure.

Many questioned Hugo Broos’ selections and tactics after South Africa lost 2-0 to Mexico.

Others called for major changes after the team managed only a draw against Czechia.

Instead, Broos trusted the same group.

“I think we played a very good game. Tactically it was very good. Everyone did the job,” Broos said after the match.

“We found the spaces at the right moment. We used our quick players very well.”

The Belgian coach reserved his strongest words for those who criticised his approach.

“I think we gave an answer to all those big mouths of the last weeks who thought we had to change something,” he said.

Broos described qualification as one of the finest achievements of his coaching career and admitted this tournament will likely be his final World Cup.

“I’ve always believed in this group. They gave me so much already and I never doubted them.”

A breakthrough for South African football

South Africa previously failed to progress beyond the group stages in 1998, 2002 and as hosts in 2010.

This squad has now changed that narrative.

The South African Government congratulated the team, calling the result “a proud moment for South Africa” and praising the players’ determination and discipline.

Sports presenter Andile Ncube also hailed the achievement, describing the players as “the team that showed the way.”

Chinese Ambassador Wu Peng joined celebrations, saying the victory reflected South Africa’s talent, resilience and belief.

Bafana finished second in Group A with four points behind Mexico and will now meet co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32.

Broos and his players have earned another opportunity to extend their historic run.
