Bafana Bafana’s historic World Cup run ends in stoppage-time heartbreak against Canada

Stephen Eustáquio's 91st-minute winner denied South Africa extra time, ending Hugo Broos' remarkable World Cup campaign after Bafana Bafana reached the knockout stages for the first time.

Bafana Bafana’s historic FIFA World Cup 2026 journey came to a cruel end on Sunday after Canada scored deep into stoppage time to claim a 1-0 victory in the Round of 32.

South Africa stood seconds away from forcing extra time before captain Stephen Eustáquio struck a superb first-time volley beyond Ronwen Williams in the 91st minute.

The goal sent Canada into the last 16 and ended one of the most memorable campaigns in Bafana Bafana history.

The defeat also appears to close an era for Hugo Broos, who had indicated before the tournament that this would likely be his final World Cup in charge of South Africa.

Bafana Bafana’s World Cup journey ends after historic breakthrough

Few expected South Africa to reach the knockout rounds before the tournament began.

Bafana recovered from an opening 2-0 defeat to Mexico, battled to a valuable draw against Czechia and then stunned South Korea to secure the country’s first-ever place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stages.

Thapelo Maseko’s historic winner against South Korea secured that breakthrough and booked South Africa’s place among the 19 teams that reached the Round of 32.

The achievement sparked celebrations across South Africa and marked the nation’s deepest-ever run at a men’s FIFA World Cup.

Canada dominate but Bafana Bafana refuse to fold

Canada controlled possession for much of the contest and repeatedly tested South Africa’s defence.

Aubrey Modiba produced a vital goal-line clearance before half-time, while Ronwen Williams made several important saves to keep the match level.

Teboho Mokoena and Oswin Appollis created Bafana’s best attacking moments, but clear opportunities remained limited.

As extra time approached, Canada finally found the breakthrough. Eustáquio connected cleanly with a loose ball outside the penalty area and fired an unstoppable volley into the net, leaving Williams with no chance.

Doctor Khumalo questions Bafana’s mentality

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder and football analyst Doctor Khumalo believed South Africa struggled to match Canada’s intensity.

“I think mentally the boys were not proper. We didn’t hurt Canada at all. The whole second half we were worse than ever. You could see the team that was mentally prepared. Everything was a bit casual.”

His assessment contrasted with the resilience many supporters praised after watching South Africa withstand wave after wave of Canadian attacks.

Ronwen Williams and Hugo Broos reflect on Bafana’s campaign

Captain Ronwen Williams chose to focus on what the squad achieved rather than the painful ending.

“I’m very proud of the boys. They kept fighting no matter what was against them. This is a very young team.

“The resilience and belief they’ve shown says everything. If this is the coach’s last tournament, he leaves with his head held high because of what he has done for South African football.”

Broos also refused to let one late goal define the tournament.

“I’m still as proud as I was three days ago. We learned a lot in this tournament. We played against a very good team.”

When asked whether Sunday marked his final match in charge, Broos said discussions with SAFA would determine his future in the coming days.

Bafana Bafana leave FIFA World Cup 2026 with renewed belief

The result ended South Africa’s World Cup campaign, but it did not erase what this young squad accomplished.

Bafana Bafana became the first South African men’s team to reach the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds.

They also joined a record African contingent in the last 32, underlining the continent’s growing influence on football’s biggest stage.
