Pensioners face uncertainty as April SASSA payment date remains unconfirmed

April SASSA payment dates still not confirmed

Millions of pensioners across South Africa are facing growing uncertainty as the April 2026 SASSA old-age grant payment date remains unconfirmed despite the month already being well underway.

While government has confirmed the new grant amounts for 2026, beneficiaries are still waiting for the official payment schedule from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) — raising concern that older persons could face a longer-than-usual wait between payments.

The uncertainty comes shortly after government confirmed this year’s social grant adjustments. According to confirmed 2026 SASSA grant increases, the old-age grant increased by R80 from April 2026, a smaller adjustment than many pensioners had hoped for.

April 2026 SASSA old-age grant payments: what we know so far

  • Old-age grants increased by R80 from April 2026
  • Pensioners aged 60–74 now receive R2 400
  • Beneficiaries aged 75 and older receive R2 420
  • The April 2026 SASSA payment date has not yet been confirmed
  • Payment cycles could stretch to five weeks due to the calendar

New grant amounts for 2026

From April 2026, the monthly grant payments are set at:

  • Old-age grant (60–74 years): R2 400 (up from R2 320)
  • Old-age grant (75 years and older): R2 420 (up from R2 340)

The increases represent roughly 3.4%, significantly lower than last year’s adjustment. Government linked the smaller increase to lower inflation over the past year.

However, civil society groups say the increase does little to cushion pensioners against rising household costs.

Why April payments may take longer

The lack of confirmed dates is largely linked to a calendar anomaly.

Traditionally, SASSA pays older persons’ grants on the first Tuesday of every month. For example, in March 2026, payments were made on Tuesday, March 3, according to the March SASSA payment schedule.

But in April the first Tuesday falls later in the week, creating a longer gap between payments.

This means many beneficiaries are actively searching for the April 2026 SASSA payment schedule, hoping the agency confirms the date before the end of the month.

Without an earlier adjustment, pensioners could face a five-week payment cycle.

What the delay means for pensioners

For many older South Africans, the grant is their primary or only source of income.

A longer payment gap can make it difficult to cover basic monthly costs such as:

  • groceries
  • electricity
  • public transport
  • medication

In many households, the grant also supports children or unemployed family members, which adds further financial pressure when payments are delayed.

What beneficiaries can do while waiting

Although payment dates remain unconfirmed, beneficiaries can take several steps while waiting for official confirmation.

Monitor official SASSA announcements
Updates are usually shared through local offices, community radio and official government channels.

Use new digital services where available
SASSA has begun rolling out a new online self-service platform for beneficiaries allowing people to check grant information and update personal details.

Ensure records are up to date
Government has also tightened verification systems, meaning beneficiaries may be contacted to confirm eligibility.

Recent reports explain how stricter SASSA grant verification processes are being used to reduce fraud and incorrect payments.

Government outreach continues despite payment uncertainty

Even as questions remain around April payment dates, the Department of Social Development has continued outreach programmes aimed at improving access to grant services.

In Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality in Limpopo, more than 169 000 social grants are paid every month, injecting over R169 million into the local economy.

The grants include:

  • 121 083 Child Support Grants
  • 33 608 Older Persons Grants
  • 6 756 Disability Grants
  • 4 918 Grant-in-Aid beneficiaries
  • 1 409 Foster Child Grants

Meanwhile, SASSA teams recently conducted a community activation in eNgcobo in the Eastern Cape, assisting residents with social grant enquiries and applications.
