Millions of pensioners across South Africa are facing growing uncertainty as the April 2026 SASSA old-age grant payment date remains unconfirmed despite the month already being well underway.

Who qualifies for the SASSA old-age grant in 2026
The old-age grant is designed to support South Africans who are 60 years or older and meet the government’s income and asset requirements.
Income limits
Applicants must earn less than:
- R8 983 per month (single)
- R17 980 per month (married)
Annual income limits
- R107 800 per year (single)
- R215 760 per year (married)
Asset limits
Applicants may own assets, but these must be valued at less than:
- R1 524 600 (single)
- R3 049 200 (married)
Applicants must also be South African citizens, permanent residents or recognised refugees living in South Africa.
Documents needed when applying
Applicants should bring the following documents when visiting a SASSA office:
- South African ID or Smart ID card
- Three months of certified bank statements
- Proof of residence not older than three months
- Documentation confirming marital status
- Evidence of income or financial dividends
- Details of assets or property owned
- Information about any private pension income
Applications can take up to three months to be processed, but successful applicants are back-paid to the date of their first application.
